WATCH: Pink Pays Homage To Olivia Newton-John at the AMA's
Lord Forgive Me For I'm About To Get Nitpicky
A highlight of the 2022 American Music Awards on Sunday night was Pink honoring the late Olivia Newton-John by covering one of her biggest hits, “Hopelessly Devoted to You”, a song Newton-John received an Oscar nomination for back in 1978 (and also one of my favorite tunes ever).
Newton-John passed away in August following a three-decade long fight with breast cancer. The Australian born goddess had a string of hits in the 70s and rose to superstardom after co-starting alongside John Travolta in the 1978 classic “Grease”, arguably the most popular musical of all-time (ain’t gonna get an argument from me).
I was obsessed with Olivia Newton John pretty much since I can remember. Quite literally she was the first celebrity crush I’ve ever had and I owned multiple posters of her in my bedroom growing up. I’ve often told the story of how I’d write my sweet Olivia letters using the address listed on the back corner of the posters in hopes she’d write back to me.
If you require proof of how much I liked her, peep a few of past Facebook statuses of mine through the years, well before her passing.
Anyway, back to Pink. I respect the hell outta Pink and was thrilled to see Olivia Newton John get the remembrance she so richly deserves. I got to be honest and get a bit nitpicky here though---Pink’s performance at the AMA’s didn’t do it for me. Don’t me wrong now---Pink’s a bad ass bitch and can belt with the best of em’. But “Hopelessly Devoted To You” worked because of Newton John’s wholesome beautiful voice. Pink’s style is a bit too raspy and rugged to work on this particular song, though to her credit she did nail that last long note. And yes, I’m being a huge prick by being critical of one of today’s biggest music stars paying homage to a legend.
Here's the full video of her AMA performance. What did you think?
